Description
Smart Roll & Tell is a 40-card dice-driven vocabulary game for children
aged 4 and up. Each player rolls the special dice the number rolled
tells them how many descriptions they must give about their picture
card before they can claim a counter. Cards are two-sided, showing a
vivid illustrated picture on the front and the printed word label on the
back, covering animals, objects and everyday items including apple, fish,
nest, coat, zoo and flower.
The dice mechanic is what makes this game genuinely different it forces
children to move beyond the first obvious description and find more to say.
Rolling a 6 and having to describe a single picture six different ways
builds remarkable vocabulary depth, lateral thinking and the ability to
consider an object from multiple perspectives.
Developed in association with Early Learning Consultants, this set is
often used in structured play and therapy-friendly learning settings.
Parents and teachers choose it because it builds the kind of rich, flexible
vocabulary and oral description skills that directly support reading
comprehension, science communication and everyday language confidence.
HOW CHILDREN LEARN
- A child rolls a 3 and picks up the apple card now they must give
three descriptions: ‘It’s red. It’s a fruit. You eat it.’ stretching
vocabulary by having to move beyond the obvious first description. - Rolling a higher number (5 or 6) forces children to dig deeper
into their vocabulary ‘It’s round. It has a stalk. It’s sweet.
It grows on a tree. You can make juice from it.’ building rich descriptive
language naturally. - The competitive element earning a counter for completing the
required number of descriptions gives children real motivation to
observe carefully and describe precisely, building both vocabulary
and attention skills together. - The two-sided card format means the word label side can be used
for a reading-recognition variation turning the same card set into
a word-to-picture matching activity for more formal vocabulary practice. - Playing across 40 different pictures animals like fish, objects like coat
and flower, places like zoo builds vocabulary breadth across multiple
categories in a single playful session.
