Description
Smart Position Words is a 32-card, 4-game-board activity for children
aged 4 and up that teaches 16 prepositions through illustrated picture
matching. Each card shows a dog in a specific position above, below,
behind, around, through, in front, up, down and more and children match
each card to the corresponding picture on their game board.
Three built-in play modes keep the activity fresh and adaptable.
Prepositions are notoriously difficult for young children to learn because
they are abstract ‘above’ and ‘below’ are relationships, not objects.
The illustrated dog character makes each positional relationship immediately
visual and concrete, while the game board format and 3 play modes create
enough variety to revisit the same vocabulary multiple times without boredom.
Parents and teachers choose this set because prepositions appear
constantly in reading instructions, science descriptions and everyday
communication. Often used in structured play and therapy-friendly learning
settings, it bridges play and language development in a format that children
find genuinely engaging.
HOW CHILDREN LEARN
- A child picks up the picture card showing a dog above a swing, reads the
word ‘above’ printed on the card, then finds the matching position on
the game board connecting the word, the image and the spatial
concept in one action. - Matching all 32 cards to their correct game board positions exposes
children to 16 distinct prepositions each illustrated with the same
consistent dog character, making the positional relationship the clear focus. - Playing across 3 different modes builds flexibility a child might match
picture to board in Mode 1, then listen to a position word and find the
card without looking in Mode 2, deepening vocabulary beyond visual
cues alone. - Using position words aloud during play ‘the dog is behind the pot’,
‘the dog is going through the tube’ builds the grammatical habit of
using prepositions correctly in real sentences. - Positional language is directly tested in school reading comprehension
and science children who can accurately use above, below, between
and through have a measurable advantage in following instructions
and describing the world.
